William R. Proctor Inc. was founded by Bill and Bea Proctor, who started the business from their home with just one truck and a backhoe. Built on hard work, determination, and a strong connection to their community, the company quickly became a trusted name in the Lunenburg area.
During the post-war baby boom, Lunenburg experienced significant residential growth. Bill played an integral role in shaping the town's development, helping to build neighborhoods such as Rolling Acres and the Hickory Hills area. His work included constructing roads, digging cellar holes, and installing septic systems—laying the groundwork for many homes that still stand today.
The company remained a true family operation. Bill Jr. joined the crew while still at Lunenburg High School (Class of 1975), followed by Dan (Class of 1981). Behind the scenes, Bea brought daughters Dawn (Class of 1976) and Judi (Class of 1980) into the business to assist with bookkeeping,
helping keep operations running smoothly as the company grew.
In 1991, responding to an increasing demand from homeowners, landscapers, and masons, the business expanded with the opening of Proctor's Cash & Carry. Originally operating out of a small brown building on Route 13, the venture quickly grew in popularity. As demand increased, the original structure was replaced with a two-story building, marking the evolution into Proctor Landscape & Masonry Supply.
Each member of the family brought their own strengths to the business. Bill Sr. was especially known for his love of building ponds throughout the Lunenburg area, leaving a lasting imprint on the landscape. Bill Jr. enjoyed operating the bulldozer and working directly with the earth, while Dan developed specialized expertise in septic systems and site development.
The early 2000s brought significant loss to the Proctor family, with the passing of Bill Jr. in 2001, Bea in 2005, and Bill Sr. in 2006. In honor of his father's legacy and the company's deep-rooted history, Dan chose to retain the name William R. Proctor Inc., rather than renaming the business.
As industry requirements evolved, particularly with the implementation of Title 5 inspections for home sales, Dan became a knowledgeable and reliable resource for homeowners navigating the process. He has continued to stay at the forefront of the field, becoming certified in the installation of advanced septic technologies, including Presby, GeoMat, and Singulair systems.
Today, Dan continues to lead the business with the same commitment to quality and community that defined its early years. Through strong professional relationships with local Boards of Health and homeowners alike, William R. Proctor Inc. remains a trusted name, built on decades of experience, family dedication, and pride in a job well done.
